The quality of friendships correlates positively with emotional regulation skills: Study of 49 Ticino children aged 8 to 11

Abstract

Emotional regulation is increasingly seen as an essential component for successful child development. It has been shown that this process influences and is influenced by different aspects such as self-esteem, social interactions, behavioral problems and parenting style. The present study aims to further investigate the variables of emotional regulation, quality of friendships and parenting style, to better understand if there is a link between them. Forty-nine children from two Ticino (CH) primary schools, aged 8 to 11, and their parents took part in the study. The results highlighted the presence of a significant positive correlation between the quality of friendships and emotional regulation skills, which is in line with the existing literature. In addition, the results showed the existence of a positive link between the dimensions of closeness and safety in friendships with the emotional regulation score. Parenting style, on the other hand, showed no link with the variables of emotional regulation and quality of friendships. Finally, a new view on the link between child gender and parenting style is discussed.
