Abstract

Cognitive biases are automated system that allow a rapid treatment, but sometimes incorrect, of information. Cognitive biases are everywhere in learning, influencing perception, retention and interpretation of information. This present paper explores the potential effect of a self-awareness of cognitive biases on learning difficulties. It also explores the efficiency of an interactive presentation as a tool to become aware of cognitive biases. The hypothesis is that self-awareness of cognitive biases through an interactive presentation would positively impacts learning by making it more critical and balanced. College students (n=85) filled in a survey about patience, self-questioning, as well as learning and cognitive biases. Participants were invited to watch an interactive presentation that explains cognitive biases. A few weeks later, participants (n=10) were invited to answer a second survey like the first one and to take part in an individual interview. The results are that the presentation allows them to understand and target cognitive biases in their own learning. 80% of the participants recognize that the interactive presentation helped them for their learning difficulties. Becoming aware of cognitive own biases seems to be a crucial step to improve learning. However, this conclusion comes from results of an exploration of the subject rather than scientific research.
